Call for Papers

AMPAL 2018

AMPAL 2018 will be held at the University of Manchester on Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd June 2018. The conference theme this year is 'Memory and Commemoration'.

We are delighted to bring AMPAL back to the University of Manchester after more than ten years, and we hope to gather together a range of postgraduates from universities all over the UK and beyond to create a truly inspiring atmosphere. This conference provides the opportunity for PhD and MA students to meet and present research in a supportive environment.

Keynote speaker (21st June): Professor Richard Hunter (Cambridge).
Professor Richard Hunter is Regius Professor of Greek at Cambridge University and a Fellow of Trinity College. Professor Hunter's research interests include (but are not limited to) Ancient Literary Criticism, Greek and Roman poetry and novels, and he has published widely on Hellenistic poetry, Hesiod, Plato, ancient comedy and the ancient reception of classical texts.

Our call for papers is open until the 13th April 2018: we welcome abstracts for 15-20 minute papers from postgraduates studying any aspect of ancient literature at all universities. Some suggested topics include (but are by no means limited to!):

- Invocations of memory and the muses in ancient literature
- Memorials and epigrams
- Memory and narration, memory as a narrative instrument
- Memory and exemplarity
- kleos and fame in epic
- Memory and the literary tradition
- Classical reception in commemorative literature

Please send abstracts of up to 350 words (in PDF format) to ampal2018.manchester@gmail.com by the 13th April. Please do not include any identifying information in the abstract but in the body of your email please tell us your name, university affiliation, programme and year of study.

We also accept proposals for complete panels of three papers: if you would like to propose a panel, please send all three abstracts in one email (with the details of each speaker in the message body) along with a short (up to 350 words) abstract for the panel as a whole.

We will notify applicants of our decision by the 20th April 2018, and the conference will open for registration for speakers and non-speakers in early May.

We hope to see many of you there!
